Prague (Czech Republic)

The Laboratory of Ecological Risks in Urban Drainage (LERMO) of the Czech Technical University in Prague was founded at the beginning of 1998 under the scheme of the project „Improvement of scientific work at Czech universities" granted by the Czech Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport 1998-2000.

The research team of the department consists of 4 researchers, 9 PhD students and 4 technicians. The research topics deal with the modelling of water quantity and quality in the urban drainage system and receiving waters. Attention has been given to the description of the processes both in a small and in a large scale ranging thus from a detailed 3-dimensional modelling of water flow and suspended solids transport in structures in the sewer system to the assessment of the interactions of the wastewater transport and the treatment system and the receiving water. LERMO is equipped with a fluid mechanics and rheometrics laboratory and has a large knowledge of the physical modelling of the fluid and suspension properties and behaviour. The team has also an ample experience with physical-chemical monitoring of wastewater as well as with biological and ecotoxicological monitoring and quality assessment of surface waters.

LERMO is a leading member of the Association of Wastewater Treatment Experts of the Czech Republic
(with Prof. Pollert being its head). The main task of the Association is knowledge and technology transfer from abroad to the Czech Republic, professional education and training, and formulation of new technical standards in accordance with the EU legislation.
